Domain name registrar to give '.ph' domains for free
Jul. 25, 2003
LOCAL Philippine domain registry dotPH is giving out the ".ph" domain to Philippine residents for free in a bid to boost adoption of the country domain, an official told INQ7.net on Friday.
In an interview, dotPH spokesperson Emil Avancena said the move "has been in the works" for months but stressed that it is not in any way "motivated by profit."
DotPh chief executive Joel Disini, who is also the administrator of the ".ph" country-code top-level domain (ccTLD), recently found himself in the hot seat following government's plans to make the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) an oversight body to govern the administration of the ".ph" domain.
Avancena noted that the timing of the announcement is just mere coincidence, and is not related to the government's controversial plan.
"We're now seeing a more accurate picture of the Philippine market after the Internet bubble burst. Before, there was money floating around. Now, people already know what they want out of a certain technology," Avancena said.
During the Internet boom, he said that people were paying millions for certain domains.
"Now, people have a better idea what domains are worth," he added.
DotPH is offering the ".ph" free of charge for five years but with certain conditions.
Avancena said the domain name should have at least18 characters, should be able to point to an existing website (to prevent domain hoarding) and should be used by a Philippine resident.
