.AU Domain to Halt Questionable Practice
April 8, 2003
According to reports released this week, the administrator of the .au domain has moved to stop resellers from claiming that customers must transfer their domain name registration to a particular registrar as a "technical requirement" of the hosting setup process.
The .au Domain Administration Code of Practice Committee has reportedly said it is revising its code to prevent resellers from claiming that transfers are "technical" requirements, requiring the companies to justify the transfers to customers on business grounds.
Industry experts said the companies might have been pushing for the transfers as a way of consolidating their business relationships to a smaller number of registrars. Web hosts might also be receiving additional commissions for the transfers.
