ICANN Still Moving Toward Non-English Domains
March 26, 2003
Members of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers are still moving ahead at introducing domain names with non-Roman characters, members said this morning.
ICANN members at a press conference held in Rio de Janeiro and broadcast via Webcast addressed some of the issues the organization plans to address in the next few days.
Tops on the list? Non-English top-level domains (TLDs). ICANN has struggled with ways to include non-Roman characters, such as kanji, in domain names, said Vint Cerf, senior vice president of Internet Architecture and Technology for WorldCom and a member of ICANN's board.
"Languages in the domain name system other than English have occupied ICANN for more than two years… We have a great deal of policy work to decide that," Cerf said.
"A great deal of progress was made this week and I hope we'll see some significant introductions as the weeks go by," Cerf added.
ICANN members said they worried about a "land rush" of individuals registering new domain names if the organization moved too quickly in implementing new TLDs.
